Herman Melville (1819-1891) was an American writer of the American Renaissance who also spent time as a sailor, teacher, lecturer, and customs inspector. His travel adventure Typee drew on his days in the Marquesas, and Moby-Dick, published in 1851, is now counted among the Great American Novels. His shorter fiction includes Bartleby, the Scrivener. Radio producers took on the white whale more than once, and both Moby Dick and Bartleby turn up among the dramas in Radio Days.
