Honoré de Balzac (1799-1850) was a French novelist and playwright who also worked as a critic, journalist and printer. His great project was La Comédie humaine, a long sequence of novels and stories that paints a broad picture of French life after Napoleon. His sharp eye for detail led many to rank him among the founders of realism in European literature. Radio drama borrowed from his pages more than once, including NBC University Theater's version of Le Père Goriot and Theatre Royal's adaptation of his short story La Grande Bretèche.
