Jane Austen (1775-1817) was an English novelist whose books, among them Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Emma and Persuasion, look with wit and irony at the lives of the English gentry. Her early novels came out anonymously and drew modest attention, but her reputation grew steadily after her lifetime. Radio returned to Pride and Prejudice again and again, with versions on Studio One, Hallmark Playhouse and NBC University Theater, and that last series also staged her Northanger Abbey.
