Play Amos 'n' Andy on Radio Days
Amos 'n' Andy was created by Freeman Gosden and Charles Correll, two white actors who voiced Black characters, and premiered on WMAQ Chicago on March 19, 1928. At its peak around 1930 to 1931 it drew an estimated 40 million listeners, and its serial storytelling shaped radio drama. In 1943, after 4,091 nightly fifteen-minute episodes, it became a weekly half-hour sitcom with a studio audience, the format heard here. The show's racial caricature drew protest from the start: in 1931, more than 700,000 African Americans signed a Pittsburgh Courier petition against it, and the NAACP later protested the television version. It is presented here as a piece of broadcast history, including that part of it.
