Play Command Performance on Radio Days
Command Performance premiered March 1, 1942, made for American troops overseas. Servicemen wrote in with requests, for a favorite star, a song, or an unusual stunt, and Hollywood's biggest names answered for free. Recorded before an audience at the Vine Street Playhouse in Hollywood, the shows reached troops by shortwave and on transcription discs sent to more than 800 servicemen-run stations. Time magazine called it "the best wartime program in America." It ran until December 1949.
