The creaking door opened on January 7, 1941, and closed for the last time October 5, 1952, after 526 episodes. Producer Himan Brown found the famous creak in a rusty office chair, and borrowed the name from Simon & Schuster's mystery books. "Raymond, your host" (Raymond Edward Johnson) greeted listeners with gruesome puns until 1945; Paul McGrath followed. Boris Karloff and Peter Lorre were among the guest stars, and from 1945 Lipton Tea sponsored it.
