Play Joe Palooka on Radio Days
Ham Fisher's big-hearted heavyweight champion started in the newspapers in 1930. Radio tried him twice: on CBS from April 12 to August 18, 1932, for Heinz, with Teddy Bergman as Joe, Frank Readick as his manager Knobby Walsh and Harry von Zell announcing; and in 1945-46 as The Story of Joe Palooka, a syndicated serial Fisher produced himself, in which Joe, just home from the war, is framed by the gambler Blackie Ballinger and goes on the run under another name.
