Lux Radio Theatre was the most popular dramatic series on radio. It began October 14, 1934, in New York, and in 1936 Lever Brothers moved it to Hollywood, where it turned to hour-long versions of current films, often with the original stars, performed live before an audience. Cecil B. DeMille hosted from June 1, 1936, to January 22, 1945, leaving after a union dispute over a one-dollar assessment he refused to pay. The show ran 927 episodes, ending June 7, 1955.
