Play Popeye the Sailor on Radio Days
E. C. Segar's Popeye first turned up in the Thimble Theatre comic strip on January 17, 1929. His radio show began on NBC on September 10, 1935, for Wheatena, with Detmar Poppen as Popeye, and it ran in three series to 1938. On the radio his strength came from Wheatena, not spinach. Frank and Anne Hummert produced, with Olive Lamoy as Olive Oyl and Charles Lawrence as Wimpy. Only 20 of the 204 shows are known to survive.
