Ventriloquist Edgar Bergen and his wisecracking dummy, Charlie McCarthy, joined The Chase and Sanborn Hour on May 9, 1937, and stayed eleven years. W. C. Fields traded insults with Charlie during the first sixteen weeks. In January 1940 the show became a half hour, The Chase and Sanborn Program, which is what it was called on this night in 1945. Chase & Sanborn's last show with Bergen aired December 26, 1948; in 1949 he moved to CBS as The Charlie McCarthy Show, sponsored by Coca-Cola.
