Fred Allen, born John Florence Sullivan, went from vaudeville juggler to radio's sharpest wit, on shows like Town Hall Tonight and Texaco Star Theatre. On December 6, 1942, he introduced Allen's Alley, a weekly stroll past the doors of his oddball neighbors: Senator Claghorn (Kenny Delmar), Mrs. Nussbaum (Minerva Pious), and Titus Moody (Parker Fennelly). His wife, Portland Hoffa, was on every show. After a year off the air for high blood pressure, he returned on October 7, 1945, Sundays at 8:30 on NBC, for Standard Brands' Tenderleaf Tea and Blue Bonnet margarine. He was radio's top-rated show in 1946-47, but ABC's giveaway show Stop the Music cut into his audience, and he signed off for good on June 26, 1949.
