Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve started out as Fibber McGee's blustering neighbor, first heard on Fibber McGee and Molly on October 3, 1939. On August 31, 1941, NBC gave him a show of his own. Gildy moved to the town of Summerfield to raise his orphaned niece Marjorie and nephew Leroy, and became the town's water commissioner. Walter Tetley played Leroy, Louise Erickson played Marjorie, and Lillian Randolph played Birdie, the cook. Harold Peary, with that famous chuckle, had the role until 1950, when Willard Waterman took over. Kraft sponsored the show, selling Parkay margarine. It ran until 1958.
