Sgt. George Baker's hapless private first appeared in Yank, the Army Weekly, in June 1942, and became a newspaper strip in May 1946. That summer, from June 12 to September 4, 1946, the Sack had his own half-hour comedy for Old Gold, filling in for Frank Sinatra's show, with Herb Vigran as the Sack and Jim Backus and Patsy Moran in the cast.
