The Shadow began in 1930 as the eerie narrator of Street & Smith's Detective Story Hour, a program meant to sell magazines. The character proved more popular than the stories, and the dramatic series premiered on Mutual on September 26, 1937, with 22-year-old Orson Welles as Lamont Cranston and Margo Lane created for radio as his companion. Sponsored by Blue Coal, it ran until December 26, 1954. "Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men?"
