Ambrose Bierce (1842-c.1914) was an American journalist, short story writer and satirist who fought for the Union in the Civil War. He drew on that experience for tales collected in Tales of Soldiers and Civilians, and his sharp wit produced The Devil's Dictionary. His war fiction left a mark on later writers such as Stephen Crane and Ernest Hemingway. His best-known story, An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge, was adapted for radio by both Escape and Suspense.
