Charles Dickens (1812-1870) was an English writer and journalist, and many readers count him as the finest novelist of the Victorian era. His career took off in 1836 when The Pickwick Papers appeared in serial form and became a publishing sensation. Over the years he produced 15 novels, five novellas and a steady stream of short stories, gave popular public readings, and edited a weekly journal for two decades. Radio loved his characters too, and Radio Days carries versions of A Christmas Carol and A Tale of Two Cities, his best-known historical novel.
