Often called the father of science fiction, H. G. Wells (1866-1946) was an English writer who turned out novels, short stories, history and social commentary. His early books, starting with the novella The Time Machine and followed by The Invisible Man and The War of the Worlds, imagined futures and invasions that still shape the genre. He was also a sharp social critic with a keen eye on what lay ahead. Radio found rich material in his work, from the Mercury Theatre's famous 1938 broadcast of The War of the Worlds to Escape's take on his short story The Country of the Blind.
