Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882) was an American poet and educator who taught at Bowdoin College and later at Harvard before leaving the classroom in 1854 to write full time. His narrative poems, among them Paul Revere's Ride, Evangeline and The Song of Hiawatha, became some of the most widely read verse in the country. He was also the first American to complete a full translation of Dante's Divine Comedy. Radio storytellers adapted The Courtship of Miles Standish, a poem so popular that a reported 10,000 copies sold in London in one day, for both Family Theater and Hallmark Playhouse.
