Joseph Conrad (1857-1924) was a Polish-British novelist and short story writer who served in the French and British merchant navies, rising to captain's rank, before leaving the sea in 1894 to write. English was not his first language, yet he is ranked among the finest prose stylists to write in it. Books such as Heart of Darkness, Lord Jim, Nostromo, and The Secret Agent often use nautical settings to look at people facing an indifferent world. Radio adapted both Heart of Darkness and Lord Jim for broadcast.
