Daphne du Maurier (1907-1989) was an English novelist, biographer, and playwright whose stories are mostly set in Cornwall. Her books are often labeled romantic, though they seldom end happily and tend to carry a sinister or supernatural edge. Jamaica Inn, Rebecca, My Cousin Rachel, and the short story The Birds are among her best-known works, and Alfred Hitchcock filmed three of them. Her suspense suited radio well, and Rebecca was dramatized on both The Campbell Playhouse and Lux Radio Theatre.
