Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) was an American writer, poet, editor, and literary critic who made his name with short stories and poems, especially tales of mystery and the macabre. He is remembered as the first well-known American writer to earn a living from writing alone, and his only complete novel was The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym. Radio dramatists came back to his work again and again, staging The Tell-Tale Heart and The Fall of the House of Usher among many others.
