Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961) was an American novelist, short-story writer and journalist whose lean, understated prose left a mark on generations of writers who followed. His novels include The Sun Also Rises, A Farewell to Arms, For Whom the Bell Tolls and The Old Man and the Sea, which won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. In 1954 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. On radio, A Farewell to Arms was performed by several series in Radio Days, and Lux Radio Theatre presented For Whom the Bell Tolls.
