John Meston was a CBS radio writer who co-created Gunsmoke with producer Norman Macdonnell, a partnership that began when the two met working on Escape. As the Western's lead writer he penned 183 of its 413 radio episodes, and he also adapted and wrote scripts for Romance and teamed with Macdonnell again on Fort Laramie. He went on to write about 196 episodes of the Gunsmoke television series.
