John Wayne (1907-1979), nicknamed Duke, was an American actor whose breakthrough came with Stagecoach. Red River, The Quiet Man, The Searchers, and True Grit followed, and True Grit brought him the Academy Award for Best Actor. He was honored with both the Congressional Gold Medal and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. On radio he recreated his film roles for Lux Radio Theatre and Screen Directors Playhouse, and in 1942 he starred in his own NBC adventure series, Three Sheets to the Wind.
