W. Somerset Maugham (1874-1965) was an English playwright, novelist and short story writer who trained as a doctor but never practiced. His novels include Of Human Bondage, The Moon and Sixpence and The Razor's Edge, and by 1908 he had four plays running in London's West End at the same time. Plenty of his stories found their way onto film and radio. Lux Radio Theatre staged both The Letter and The Razor's Edge, and The Letter also turned up on The Molle Mystery Theatre.
