Dick Powell (1904-1963) was an American actor, singer, producer and director who first won fame in musicals such as 42nd Street and Footlight Parade. He then remade himself as a tough guy, becoming the first actor to play Philip Marlowe by name on screen in Murder, My Sweet. Later he moved behind the camera and co-founded Four Star Television with Charles Boyer, David Niven and Ida Lupino. Radio gave him two detective roles of his own: the wisecracking lead in Richard Diamond, Private Detective, which often closed with him singing, and Richard Rogue in Rogue's Gallery.
