Radio listeners knew Jean Hersholt as Dr. Paul Christian, a philosophical country doctor in the Midwestern town of River's End. Dr. Christian debuted on CBS in 1937 and became a popular, long-running hit, staying on the air for 17 years and inspiring a series of films. He also appeared on The Screen Guild Theatre, and his long movie career included Greed and Heidi.
