Orson Welles became a radio star overnight in 1937 as the announcer in the Columbia Workshop play "The Fall of the City," and that same year Mutual cast him as Lamont Cranston, The Shadow. In 1938 he began a summer series for CBS, The Mercury Theatre on the Air, whose War of the Worlds broadcast made him famous; Campbell Soup then picked it up as The Campbell Playhouse. His first feature film was Citizen Kane.
