Don Ameche (1908-1993) was an American actor, comedian, and vaudevillian whose film career carried on into the 1980s with Trading Places and Coming to America. His performance in Cocoon won him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, and Things Change brought him the Volpi Cup for Best Actor. Radio was a big part of his story. He worked as announcer and sketch player on The Chase and Sanborn Hour, then scored a late 1940s success opposite Frances Langford in The Bickersons, a comedy about a quarreling couple.
